Thai Massage has its origins thousands of years ago, in the area we now call Thailand, there lived sages / shamans called Reusi.

They studied the mystery of life and were concerned about their health and well being.

At that time they realised that everything in the world is made up of 6 elements,

Earth, water, fire, wind, ether and consciousness.

The right balance of these elements for a person would bring optimal health.

They then developed Reusi Dat Ton, a complete practice combining cleansing, self-massage, joint movement, stretching, active movement, breathing and meditation.

By freeing the body from blockages and stimulating the whole system, it would help to balance the element within the body.

In order to help others, they adapted the practice so that it could be given as a therapy to someone who might not be able to practice, or to help someone in their progress and development.

This is probably how Thai medicine began to develop as we know it today.

Later, when Buddhism came to the area, many Reusi were touched by the message and joined the Sangha (Buddhist followers), contributing their knowledge.

Much of the knowledge of Thai medicine was passed on and preserved by Buddhist monks.

In more recent times, with the advent of modern medicine in Thailand, much of this knowledge was banned for about 60 years.

Since then, there has been a resurgence of interest in traditional medicine, and programmes and schools have been set up. Adapted to the modern way of learning and in an effort to fit in with modern medicine, some of the Five Elements theory has been left aside.

Over the years, ancient knowledge has survived in remote areas and through a few lines of Reusi, still available to those who wish to learn more.
